Rehnumah Insan, 17, from Marton, Middlesbrough, beat off competition from 100 students from across the UK to win the competition.
The student at Guisborough’s Prior Pursglove College recalled 120 words, 122 numbers, 17 fictional events with their dates, and 48 playing cards in sequence.
She broke records for remembering the most words, numbers and cards.
The competition was devised by World Memory Champion Dominic O’Brien who ran training sessions in schools and colleges.
Thousands of students participated in memory training and took part in regional heats in order to qualify for the final held at the University of Wolverhampton.
Rehnumah said: “People had told me I had a good memory so I thought I might as well go and try it.”
She did a training session with Dominic learning how to use imagination to help memorise words and dates.
Rehnumah says the competition has helped in her studies. “It’s been really useful as I’m doing law and I have to memorise dates and it’s especially good as it helps lift your confidence. I think it’s definitely going to help me in my revision.
“I was really shocked I had won. When they told me I had broken three world records it came as another shock.”
Mum Jasmine, a beauty therapist, and dad Khademul, a marine surveyor in Maritime & Coastguard Agency, are proud of Rehnumah, who has a sister, Lubaba who is also excelling and following the footsteps of her sister. Rehnumah won a trophy, certificates, a laptop and software. And she has some top tips for memorising. “Sit down in a very quiet place and do it when you want to do it, and not when you are tired. Try and make it fun and use your imagination. You should enjoy it.”
Other successful Teesside students included Karl Miller from Redcar Community College, who finished fifth, and Hannah Payne, from Prior Pursglove, who came eighth. Tyler Bulmer, Natalya Scott and Laura Keane from St Patrick’s Catholic College finished 13th, 14th and 65th, Luke Pitt and Sophie Ditchburn from Redcar Community College came 18th and 20th, and Emily Watts from Prior Pursglove College also finished 20th.
