BMMOA Ensures Safe Return of 7 Bangladeshi Seafarers from Alang, India
We wish to inform you of a recent incident concerning the wellbeing of Bangladeshi seafarers and the swift action taken by the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association (BMMOA) in response.
On 9 May 2025, BMMOA received a WhatsApp message alerting that seven Bangladeshi crew members aboard MV LORD 17 (IMO 9146091) were stranded in Alang Breaking Yard, Gujarat, India, without access to food or water and living under inhumane conditions.

That same day, BMMOA contacted the ITF Inspector in Mumbai, and by 10 May, emergency food supply for the seafarers was arranged and delivered.
It was also discovered that despite serving on board for 6 to 10 months, the seafarers had not received any wages. BMMOA immediately reached out to the manning agent, ITF, and the Director General of Shipping (India) to ensure that the crew’s outstanding wages were addressed. As a result, by 13 May 2025, the crew confirmed they had received all pending wages up to April 2025.
There were also significant complications in the crew’s sign-off process, which BMMOA resolved in coordination with the Middle East ITF network and the shipowner. Finally, on 31 May 2025, all seven seafarers signed off and safely returned to Dhaka on 1 June 2025.
Unfortunately, they are yet to receive their Extra Work Allowance and current month’s wages from the manning agency.
The seafarers involved are:
- Md Samrat Fahim (Mess Boy) – CDC: T/3651
- Md Sagor Sheik (Tr. OS) – CDC: T/36647
- SM Shahadat Siraj (Tr. OS) – CDC: T/36566
- Md Nahean Ahmed (JMETO) – CDC: C/O/11889
- Md Tanjim Hossain Khan (Tr. Wiper) – CDC: T/36562
- Md Shahriar Ikbal Sagor (Tr. Wiper) – CDC: T/36561
- Md Rafiqul Islam (Tr. OS) – CDC: T/36003
It is important to note that none of the seafarers were BMMOA members or officers. However, as fellow Bangladeshi seafarers, BMMOA took up their cause purely on humanitarian grounds, overseeing the entire process until their safe repatriation.
We remain committed to the welfare of all Bangladeshi mariners, regardless of membership status.
With sincere regards,
Captain Md. Anam Chowdhury
President
Marine Engineer Md. Shakhawat Hossain
General Secretary
