Bangladesh Shipping Owned Crude Oil Tanker BANGLAR SHOURABH Catches Fire: One Dead
Another fatal maritime incident occurred in Bangladesh involving a major fire aboard the crude oil tanker owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC).
On 04 October at around 12:45 AM local time, a fire broke out aboard the BANGLAR SHOURABH, causing the death of one crewmember. The incident took place when the state-flagged vessel was docked at the outer anchorage of CHITTAGONG Port.
Following the incident, the captain and the crewmembers of BANGLAR SHOURABH abandoned the vessel. Three specialised tugboats from the navy and four tug boats from the Coast Guard and Port Authority arrived for firefighting. After four hours of effort, the fire was brought under the control of the authorities and the firefighting team.
The Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) Bangladesh stated that one of the crew members died in the incident, and 47 crewmembers were rescued successfully. Several of the injured crew members were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
The deceased was identified as Sadek Mia, 59, a general steward of the oil tanker. According to sources, the fire broke out after an explosion on the vessel, which had been anchored in the Bay of Bengal near the Karnaphuli River.
ISPR reported that BANGLAR SHOURABH was loaded with eleven thousand metric tons of crude oil at the time of the incident.
Earlier, on 30 September, a fire broke out aboard BANGLAR JYOTI, resulting in an explosion in the crude oil tanker that caused the death of three crew members. Both vessels were built in 1987 and are owned by BSC.
