In Memoriam: Marine Chief Engineer Rashid Kazmi (2E)

A Distinguished Mariner of the 2nd Batch (1963–1964), Mercantile Marine Academy, Chittagong.

The maritime fraternity deeply mourns the passing of Marine Chief Engineer Rashid Kazmi, a distinguished marine engineer, respected professional, and proud alumnus of the Second Batch (1963–1964) of the then Mercantile Marine Academy, Chittagong (now Bangladesh Marine Academy). He was also an ex-Cadet of Fauzdarhat Cadet College (FCC).

إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un
(Surely, we belong to Allah and surely to Him we shall return.)

Chief Engineer Rashid Kazmi passed away in Karachi, Pakistan, on 11 June 2026, after a prolonged battle with blood cancer and other medical complications. His passing marks the loss of one of the maritime world’s respected veterans and a proud representative of the Academy’s early pioneering generation. (Ref: C F Zaman (2E))

“With the passing of Marine Chief Engineer Rashid Kazmi, the maritime world loses one of its respected veterans and the Mercantile Marine Academy loses a proud son of its pioneering second batch. His contribution to marine engineering and merchant shipping will be remembered with respect and gratitude. May he rest in eternal peace.”

Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, Rashid Kazmi belonged to the pioneering generation of merchant marine officers who received their professional education at the Chittagong academy during the formative years of maritime development in the region. As a cadet of the Academy’s second batch, he was among those who helped lay the foundations of a strong and professional merchant navy tradition.

Following his graduation, he embarked on a distinguished seafaring career. Through dedication, technical excellence, and unwavering commitment, he rose steadily through the ranks to attain the coveted position of Marine Chief Engineer—one of the highest professional achievements in the merchant navy.

Throughout his career, Chief Engineer Kazmi earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, shipmates, and fellow mariners for his technical expertise, calm leadership, and mentorship of younger engineers. Like many marine engineers of his era, he made significant contributions to the safe and efficient operation of merchant vessels, supporting global trade and connectivity.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he will be remembered as a gentleman of humility, discipline, and perseverance. His lifelong dedication to the maritime profession reflected both his passion for engineering and his deep commitment to service at sea.

He maintained a lasting bond with his alma mater, visiting the Academy on several occasions and participating in various events—always reflecting his enduring connection with the institution and its community.

His passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of the early graduates of the Mercantile Marine Academy. He leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, dedication, and maritime excellence that will continue to inspire generations of marine engineers and merchant navy officers.

The maritime community extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, former classmates, and colleagues in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and across the world.

May Almighty Allah grant him eternal peace and the highest place in Jannatul Ferdous. Ameen.
