Chief Engineer A. K. M. Masud Karim (21E), an esteemed alumnus of the Bangladesh Marine Academy, has joined the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as Deputy Director in the Maritime Safety Division. Prior to this prestigious appointment, he served with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) of the United Kingdom.
In his new role at IMO, Chief Engineer Masud Karim will work within the division responsible for the implementation and development of key international maritime safety conventions, including SOLAS and other associated safety regulations. His position carries significant responsibility in shaping global regulations related to cargo safety, maritime systems, and operational standards. He will also oversee the work of three IMO sub-committees within the safety framework.
Chief Engineer Masud Karim’s professional journey reflects dedication, perseverance, and excellence. He began his career as a surveyor with DNV in Bangladesh, demonstrating a strong commitment to maritime safety from the early stages of his career. Driven by continuous professional development, he later earned an MBA from The Open University.

His distinguished career includes serving as a Marine Surveyor and later as Head of Maritime Security and Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) at the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Through these roles, he has contributed significantly to maritime governance, safety regulation, and international maritime standards.
His appointment to this influential position at IMO represents a remarkable milestone not only in his career but also for the Bangladeshi maritime community worldwide. As he continues to contribute at the highest levels of the international maritime arena, Chief Engineer Masud Karim stands as a source of inspiration for current and future generations of Bangladeshi seafarers and maritime professionals.
