IN MEMORY OF LATE ZAHIRUDDIN MAHMOOD (1-N): Mubashir Ahmed Khan (2E)

Captain Zahiruddin Mahmood passed away on 5th October, 2020 in Chittagong. Inna lillahe wa inna elaihe Rajeun.

Late Zahiruddin Mahmood belonged to the 1st Batch (Nautical) of the Academy. He had previously been colleague of Mr. Iqbal Jawed Unus at Cadet College, Sargodha (Pakistan). Iqbal Jawed Unus was my classmate at Dhaka University. We were in first year of BSc. (Honours) in Physics and Mathematics respectively. Our accommodation was in Fazlul Haq Hall.

It was before my joining the Academy that late Zahiruddin Mahmood came to Dhaka University to meet Iqbal Jawed Unus. I remember that we had breakfast in the University canteen. He gave me useful information about life in the Academy. During my cadetship (1963—1965), he visited the Academy several times.

During the IMO Workshop on Marine Pollution Prevention and Response, held at the Academy (24—28 April. 1983), I met him when the participants (including myself) were having lunch in the Chittagong Port Trust Building. My last meeting with him was in Chalna Port in 1983 when I was Chief Engineer of Banglar Baani. Mongla Port Authority had arranged a function on the World Maritime Day. He was then holding a senior post in Mongla Port Authority.

Late Zahiruddin Mahmood was a smart man with pleasant personality. May his soul rest in eternity. Our sympathies are with all members of the bereaved family.
