The Achievements of Bangladeshi Mariners: Mubashir Ahmed Khan (2E)

The Achievements of Bangladeshi Mariners: Mubashir Ahmed Khan (2E)

[PART-1] 03.03.2017

I have read with interest the article “Our Pride and Inspiration” written by our popular dear friend F.R. Chowdhury dated 22nd August 2016.
The achievements of Bangladeshi mariners in general and those of the Juldians in particular are so many that if written down, it will form into a thick book. What F. R. Chowdhury has written is tip of the iceberg.
I venture to write a little bit about the tremendous work done by the Bangladeshi mariners not only in Bangladesh but in other countries also, e.g. Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, USA and United Kingdom.

The number (approximately 90) of Bangladeshi MSc. graduates from the World Maritime University, Malmo, Sweden is twice the number (approximately 45) of Pakistani graduates from this University. In the field of Maritime education, the achievements of Bangladeshi mariners are worth mentioning and commendable. In Bangladesh itself, a number of Marine Colleges are being successfully run by dedicated Bangladeshi mariners.

The Juldia Marine Academy has produced a large number of talented mariners. It is difficult to sum up the great work done by the Academy in this article. This Academy has been inducting female cadets also which is admirable. Moreover, a four years bachelor degree programme has recently been started at this esteemed Institution. The Commandant of the Academy, Dr. Sajid Hussain is PhD and has lately been appointed as IMO Maritime Ambassador by the Government of Bangladesh (Ministry of Shipping) and IMO Secretary General Dr. Kitack Lim. Credit goes to Dr. Sajid Hussain.

In the United Kingdom, you visit any Maritime College and you will find one or two Bangladeshi lecturers. So far as the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is concerned, it is to a great extent, controlled by the Bangladeshi mariners. There are presently more than fifteen Bangladeshi Surveyors/Examiners working with MCA. It is interesting to note that UK has been a leading maritime country and now in this very country, maritime rules and regulations are implemented by no persons other that mariners of Bangladeshi origin. What a miracle! The credit definitely goes to the dedicated and hardworking Bangladeshi mariners with high standard of professionalism. This is an achievement which all Bangladeshis should be proud of.

In the middle of 2015, an IMO conference was held in London. In this conference, a record number (ten) of Bangladeshi mariners participated as delegates representing three countries i.e. Singapore, UK and Bangladesh. It is a remarkable achievement. I don’t know whether this has been highlighted in Bangladesh press or not. These mariners are heroes who work behind the scene and are rarely visible. The noteworthy aspect about these mariners is that the majority of them come from average middle class families. It is due to their God gifted intelligence, hard work and dedication that they reached the peaks of their professional careers.

Now I mention some Bangladeshi mariners who have been doing excellent jobs in their respective marine fields. Mr. Zillur Rahman (25 E) is presently working as Global Maintenance Manager for Shell Petroleum based in London. His brother Captain Faizur Rahman has so many degrees as shown on his business card. He is stationed in Tilbury and doing excellent work. Mr. Zillur Rahman’s second brother Captain Mujeebur Rahman is also a mariner and working in Bangladesh. The late father of these three mariners Captain M L Rahman was Pakistan’s Senior Nautical Surveyor before 1971. After Liberation ( I would call it Separation), he became Commandant of Marine Academy Juldia. He acted as Principal Officer Mecanlile Marine Department (POMMD) also at Chittagong. Mr. Zillur Rahman informed me that his brother in law is also a mariner. So it is a unique family of outstanding mariners and an example of good work and contribution in maritime field.

A glowing example of excellence is that Captain Moin Ahmed who has been appointed as Director General of International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO) stationed in London. It is no doubt a prestigious position.

I shall mention a few more talented mariners from Bangladesh. Mr. Ashfaqul Haq (13 E) is Marine Manager of Suncor Energy, the biggest Energy Company of Canada. Mr. Ashfaqul Haq is a very efficient and intelligent mariner. Captain Mizanur Rahman (18 N) and Captain Shahid Akhtar (21 N) are doing excellent jobs with the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). Other mariners are Mr. Furqanul Qauder and Mr. Zakirul Bhuiyan. Credit goes to Mr. Baten who has started work on Global Professional Mariners Database. It is a praiseworthy venture. Another prominent mariner is Captain M. Anam Chowdhury, who has been working as Beaching Master, Marine Surveyor and Consultant, stationed in Chittagong.

From the second Batch are Sheikh Shahahuddin, Mr. Abdul Haq, C F Zaman and Captain Noor Ahmad. Sheikh Shahahuddin had been teaching for a long time in Singapore. Now he teaches at some Maritime Institute in Bangladesh. Mr. Abdul Haq retired as POMMD (Chittagong) and is now settled in USA. Mr. C F Zaman was Surveyor of German Lloyds in Bangladesh for many years. He has been doing very useful work e.g. looking after hospital ships in Bangladesh. All four were not only my batchmates at the Academy but close friends also. I must mention Shaheen Khan of 31st Batch. Then Captain Khairul Anam, Principal Surveyor, In Charge with MCA, needs no introduction. He is also the main figure behind the annual get-together functions of Bangladeshi mariners held every year regularly in Norwich, UK. I have been attending those functions regularly (I missed only once).

So far as honourable F.R. Chowdhury is concerned, he is an institution, the seniormost mariner from Bangladesh. He has held key maritime posts both in UK and Bangladesh. He is now retired and settled in London but he still continues writing useful and informative articles on marine topics. There are other mariners also worth mentioning. Mr. Azizul Haq (3N) was Extra Master. He held key posts e.g. Commandant, Marine Academy, Technical Director and then Managing Director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC). Then the first Extra Chief Engineer from Bangladesh was Mr. Azizul Islam. Mr. Abdul Majid of 3rd Batch was Superintendent in BSC, later on, he held important technical post in Bangladesh Oxygen.

Captain Qazi Ali Imam has been successfully running International Maritime Academy in Dhaka. Our friend Sharif Atiqur Rahman was Member Engineering, Chalna Port Authority. Marine Engineer Mr. Hanif Dewan, who had been teaching in Malaysia, has recently been appointed as Deputy Commandant of the newly established Liberian Maritime Training Institute (LMTI). It is an extraordinary achievement. Also Mr. Ali Azfar (20N) has been appointed as Advisor in Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Canberra. These are all hero mariners of Bangladesh. From the 1st Batch, late Salahuddin was the leader of the new emerging mariners of Bangladesh. He was Senior Superintendent in BSC, later on set up his own company in Chittagong related to marine repairs and other activities.

Khundkar Noorul Wahab (IE) was the First Engineer Examiner of Bangladesh. On behalf of Bangladesh Government, he looked after IMO affairs also. Mr. Noorul Wahab conducted a workshop on Marine Pollution Prevention, Control and Response at the Academy from 24th to 28th April 1983 with collaboration of IMO. I attended this workshop and the certificate is still lying with me. Mr. Noorul Wahab was a real Asset of the Bangladeshi marine community. Our friend Mr. Qasim Bhai of 3rd Batch is still going strong and works with MCA at Aberdeen (Scotland). Then there is Captain Ghulam Hussain whom I met recently at the 40th year of Chishti Bhai’s marriage celebration ceremony in London. Chishti Bhai belongs to 3rd batch and has sailed as Master for many years. Captain Ghulam Hussain is currently working as Accreditation Manager with the Nautical Institute, London. Mr. F R Choudhary has mentioned in his article Mr. Hussain Imam of 2nd batch (N). Mr. Hussain Imam was in the Physics Department of Dacca University, (I was in the Mathematic Department). We appeared in the written examination together for admission to the Academy at Dacca College. We went together for the interview chaired by Commodore M. Asif Alvi (the Commandant). After selection, we both travelled together by train from Dacca to Chittagong to join the Academy. It was in 1963 (probably 1st of October). Mr. Hussain Imam was a brilliant cadet always topping the nautical class in all examinations. He got the best Nautical Cadet Award.

The list of talented Bangladeshi mariners is endless. It is difficult to mention all of them. I may write soon an addendum to this article explaining how I was motivated to write it. I hope to mention the names of some more Bangladeshi mariners left out here. Please note that in near future, you will insha’allah be reading my second article entitled “I remember, Marine Academy Juldia Chittagong” It is hoped that you will find it interesting.
With best wishes to all Bangladeshi mariners.

For Bangladeshi Mariners, I maintain a separate email address ( mubashira2050@gmail.com). Whenever I open this email, I find some good news about the outstanding achievements of BD Mariners. The latest example is that of Abdullah Omar Siddique (16E). Recently he was promoted to the rank of Manager, Compliance and Enforcement Services, Marine Safety and Security in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Earlier he worked as Acting Manager for 16 months in the same Organisation. Previously too, Mr Siddique has received several Awards in recognition of his professional achievements.

BD Mariners have been doing excellent jobs with the Australia Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Mr. Naweed Omar received the” Values of Action Award” for End Year 2019. Before this, M. Chowdhury Sadruddin (19 E) received the Year End Award for 2017. Also Mr. Qamruzzaman (11E) was granted this Award , Mid Year 2018. We congratulate these three BD Mariners for their achievements. Mr. Qamruzzaman writes, “this is an excellent feat of Bangladeshi Mariners in AMSA, a hat trick for three years in a row, considering that there are 450 employees in the Organisation”. The other BD Mariners presently serving excellently in Australia are Mr. Shahabuddin Khan and AKM Jamal Uddin (28E).

It is worth mentioning that Mr. Wasiur Rauf (35E-UK) has recently been elected unanimously as Vice Chairmanof the Membership Committee of IMarEST (The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology) London, UK for a period of five years. Credit goes to Wasiur Rauf. Indeed, it is a prestigious assignment.

Mr. Muztaba Reza (14E) is Extra Chief Engineer. He has served with the Lloyds Register for a long period of thirty years. He is soon retiring as Principal Engineer Surveyor in Jingsu, China. Mr. Reza should be congratulated for his professional achievements.

Captain Mohammad Belayet Hussain belongs to the First Batch (Nautical) of the Bangladesh Marine Academy (then Marine Academy). I had met him in Fazlul Haq Hall of Dhaka University before myself joining the Academy. He very kindly gave me ample information about life in the Academy as well as future prospects in marine profession. I have mentioned in my previous article, “ I REMEMBER MARINE ACADEMY JULDIA CHITTAGONG (1)”, that the 1st Batch Nautical cadets were given message ( during summer vacation ) that they should join ships instead of coming to the Academy for second year study ( third and fourth term). These senior cadets would visit the Academy when their ships called Chittagong Port. I remember one day Mr. Belayet Hussain came to the Academy. With shining shoes, nice pant, shirt and tie, he looked smart. He told us about life on board ship as cadet.

Recently M. Belayet Hussain has written a 10-page article about the Port of Chalna. This article contains a lot of information. It explains how the dedicated BD Mariners put the Chalna Port into operation starting from scratch. Captain M Shafi, Captain Q A B M Rahman, Captain Zaheeruddin Mahmood, Captain Belayet Hussain, M A Quddus and Captain S M A Islam were pioneers of this venture. Credit goes to them all. Captain Belayet Hussain states that Captain Ferdous Alam also served as pilot in Chalna Port. Pilot ( Captain) K M Rahman was later Master of M V Banglar Baani in 1983. I served with him as Chief Engineer. Captain Rahman would mention his experience as pilot in Chalna. He once said that due to non-availability or shortage of pilot boats, the pilots used sampans for embarkation/disembarkation.

Captain Zaheeruddin Mahmood was from the 1st Batch of the Academy. He had graduated from Cadet College Sargodha (Pakistan). He held key posts in Chalna and Chittagong Ports. No doubt, he was a smart man with pleasant personality. I had the opportunity to meet him several times. Presently he does not feel well. We pray for his good health.

Another good news is that recently Captain Mohammad Saydur Rahman (14N) has been appointed as Local Representative for Bangladesh by the International Maritime Employers’ Council ( IMEC ). IMCE is involved with seafarers’ welfare, employment and training globally. No doubt, it is a great achievement and a matter of pride for all BD Mariners.

Mr. Sajid Hussain ( Commandant, Bangladesh Marine Academy since 2009 ) was selected for the Outstanding Contribution Award in Marine Education, 2019 from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology ( IMarEST) London, UK. This Award was conferred on him on 15th March, 2019 at the IMarEST Council Session in London. Hats off to Commandant Sajid Hussain.

Recently we have lost a few prominent BD Mariners. Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Ilaihe Rajeun. May their souls rest in eternity. All our sympathies are with the bereaved families. Their names are as follows.

[PART-4] 17.05.2020

Captain Furkanul Quader (6N –UK) has been elected as Fellow of the Nautical Institute, London. We wholeheartedly congratulate him. Furkanul Quader has indeed so many professional achievements to his credit. The Bangladeshi Marine Community can truly be proud of him.

Captain Ghulam Hussain was previously the Technical Manager of the Nautical Institute, London. Recently he has been appointed as Deputy Director, Maritime Affairs of the Bahamas Maritime Authority. The higher education record of Captain Ghulam Hussain is execellent. He obtained MBA in Shipping and Logistics from Middlesex University in 2013 and received LLM degree in International Maritime Law from the World Maritime University (WMU) in 2017. He is Fellow of the Nautical Institute, the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT), London. Truly Ghulam Hussain is a valuable asset to the Bangladeshi Mariners. The Commandant, Bangladesh Marine Academy, Doctor Sajid Hussain has recently been elected as Trustee ( Member of the Board of Trustees ), the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), London. Dr Sajid Hussain is the highest qualified Mariner of Bangladesh. His contribution to Maritime Education is tremendous and well known.

In 1983, I was Chief Engineer of M V Banglar Doot which was engaged in lighterage operation (bringing wheat from mother vessels at Outer Anchorage to Chittagong Port). Mr. Azizul Islam had just returned from UK after passing his Extra Chief Examination. I overheard late A F Mohammadullah (then the Senior Engineer Superintendent of BSC ) while sitting in his Office that Mr Azizul Islam was the first Bangladeshi mariner to become Extra Chief Engineer. I remember that to celebrate, a party was also held at Azizul Islam’s residence in the Academy where he was Lecturer.

In my humble opinion, Late Shafiuddin Ahmed was the first Bangladeshi Extra Chief Engineer. In London, he passed this Examination in 1971 obtaining the highest marks. He was awarded Silver Medal by the Institute of Marine Engineers (now IMarEST). In 1971, he joined the Marine Division of the UK Department of Transport as Engineer Surveyor and Examiner. In 1980, late Shafiuddin Ahmed was deputed by IMO to Bangladesh as Expert / Advisor. He was pioneer of starting Professional Examinations for Marine Engineers in Bangladesh. Late Shafiuddin Ahmed was an extra ordinary talented person. All his achievements cannot be summed up in this article. He also obtained degrees, i.e. BA (Hons), LLB (Hons) and MSc.(Astrophysics) from UK Universities. He wrote poetry and translated one hundred and twenty poems of Tagore into English. It is quite amazing that late Shafiuddin Ahmed possessed so many talents. He was Engineer, Physicist, Mathematician, Teacher,Educationist, Writer and Poet.

Late Marine Engineer Ali Asghar sailed with Ellerman Lines until he obtained his First Class Engineer Certificate. He served as Deputy Engineer Superintendent with NSC (now PNSC) at Chittagong. He was the first Technical Manager of BSC stationed in London. Later on, late Ali Asghar joined the Japanese Classification Society (NKK) in its London Office.

During my service with BSC as Chief Engineer (1981 to 1983), late Tareck Anis Ahmed was the Technical Director. Earlier, he had been the Principal Officer of MMD at Chittagong. Later on he became the Director General of Shipping. Finally, late Tareck Anis Ahmed took the post of MD, BSC. I would see him in the BSC Office when he was TD. I remember once he came personally on board our Ship Solidarity ( Banglar Kiran ). His young daughter was then acting in a BTV drama serial Shakol Shanga.

I have mentioned a prominent Mariner in my previous article, “ THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF BANGLADESHI MARINERS ( 2 ), Captain M Shafi with excellent service record. After retirement, he undertook short term assignments with IMO, the Commonwealth Secretariat and other private shipping companies. Captain M Shafi then became a staunch Rotarian and was honoured with Rotary District Governor’s Gold Medal as Selfless Soul during Rotary Year Launching Ceremony by the Honourable President of the Republic at a function held in Hotel Sonargaon, Dhaka on 1st July 2014.

One Mariner from PSC Second Batch was Captain S M A Islam. After completing pre-sea training onboard HMS Conway, he joined British Steamship Company as cadet. He later served on many Pakistani and Bangladeshi ships. Finally, he came ashore and served as Port Director at Mongla, Principal Officer of MMD, Chittagong and then the Director General of Shipping.

Shaheed Captain G A Kazi was Nautical Surveyor with MMD and then served as Deputy Coservator and Harbour Master of Chittagong Port. He was honest and strict Officer. He was fair coloured with a towering personality. When I was cadet at the Academy, Lt. Commander Asrarullah ( Chief Education Officer) sent me to him for my eye sight examination. Late G A Kazi took me in his car from Chittagong Port Trust Office to MMD Office. He himself checked my eye sight. It was on his recommendation that I was transferred from Nautical to Engineering class. ( At that time, eye sight rules for deck officers were very strict). I met him again when he came to the Academy on the occasion of Annual Passing out in June,1964. Sadly he was martyred in 1971 war. May his soul rest in eternity.

[PART-5] 28.11.2020

On 10th April 2019, Captain Belal Ahmed took over Chairmanship of the International Maritime Employers’Council (IMEC) from Captain Rajesh Tandon. Captain Belal Ahmed writes,”my involvement in the IMEC started in 2005 and by 2007,I was elected to the Board of IMEC. After twelve years in the Board,I was elected to become Chairman of the Organisation.” It is indeed a great achievement. Many BD Mariners sent messages of congratulations to Captain Belal Ahmed.

Captain Zakirul Bhuiyan (23N) is serving as Senior Lecturer, Research and Innovation Co-ordinator at Warsash Maritime, Academy, UK. He has so many qualifications to his credit, e.g. MSc.,MBA, PGCE,FNI and FRINA. His latest achievement in july 2020 is that he and his team have been recognised by Mar R1-UK ( supported by the UK Department of Transport) for their research project IGNITE ( Intelligent Ship Centre ) and have been awarded at the category under Technology and Innovation in UK Maritime Call. The IGNITE project will provide a unique MASS ( Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships ) testing and training facility. Hats off to Captain Zakirul. All BD Mariners are proud of you.

In my previous articles, I have written that BD Mariners are well organised not only in Bangladesh but in foreign countries as well. In Australia, there are more than two hundred and fifty (250) BD Mariners. On 7th September 2020, an Association was incorporated and named Bangladesh Australian Mariners Association (BAMA). Led by Abdul Hannan (10E), the office bearers and members of the Association, worked relentlessly for twelve months and developed a unique and workable constitution for all eight states and territories. Congratulations to Australian BD Mariners for this achievement. With reference to BAMA, Captain Saifulla of Melbourne nicely writes,”one day we can establish a global FEDERATION for all Bangladeshi Mariners worldwide. Our geographical distance would never be a factor, as long as our hearts are together.” This spirit of unity, goodwill and co-operation among BD Mariners should be appreciated.

The short CV of Captain Zillur Rahman is in front of me. It is difficult to sum up all his achievements in this article so I shall touch upon a few only. He belongs to the 11th Batch of the Acedemy. As Master Mariner, he left sea in 1989 after three years of command. Thereafter, he has been pursuing career in Marine Surveying and Consultancy in Bangladesh for the last thirty years. Captain Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan has been Managing Director of Marinecare Consultants Bangladesh Limited- a Consultancy Firm for Marine Hull & Machinery, Cargo, P & I, Loss Control, Casualty Management, Maritime Security and all other Ports & Shipping matters. In the Nautical Institute UK, he has been Member (1980), Fellow (2006), Council Member (2009-2015) and Member, Board of Trustees (2016-2019). Captain Zillur Rahman is Fellow of the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) UK, Member of its Board of Directors and Regional Director for Bangladesh. He was elected President of the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association, (2014-2015 & 2016-2017). Captain Zillur Rahman has been involved with Maritime Education in Bangladesh also.

Another prominent BD Mariner is Ghulam M Suhrawarthy who belongs to the 6th Batch of the Academy. During the 1971 war, he deserted Pakistani Ship and applied for political asylum in Baltimore, USA. He attended New York Maritime College and obtained BS, MS degrees in Marine Trasportation Management (1971 -1975). In USA, he served in different capacities, e.g. Marine Surveyor, Terminal Manager, Port Captain and Operations Manager. In 1980, he started his own business in Marine Surveying with his wife at his side. He and his wife still work in the same office as they have done for all these years and developed it into a vibrant business encompassing many ports in USA and many other foreign countries (including Pakistan). He permanently resides with his wife New Jersey,USA and travels to Bangladesh often. Besides business operations in Bangladesh, Ghulam Suhrawarthy founded an English medium boarding school in Matlab Chandpur (his birth place). He plans to extend this campus to add a university and medical college. The name of the school is “Carter Academy.” In addition, Ghulam Suhrawarthy is the auther of two comprehensive books titled “ BANGLADESH MARITIME HISTORY ” and “MARINE SUEVEY HANDBOOK”.

Engineer Surveyor Khan Majlis was one of the five PSC (Public Service Commission) 3rd Batch (1954) cadets. He joined IWTA and was in charge of Barisal Workshop. Later he joined Lloyds Register and served as Country Manager in Bangladesh and Senior Surveyor in Iran.

One of the PSC 3rd Batch cadets was Saiful Islam. After completing dockyard training in Thornycroft, Southampton, he was awarded PIDC scholarship and obtained degree in naval architecture from Newcastle University,UK. He served in Khulna Shipyard and was then Director in Bangladesh Engineering & Shipbuilding Corporation (BESC). He was a renowned singer also.

Engineer Sakhawat Hossain (BSC 3rd Batch Cadet,1954), completed training in Devonport and served for 8 years in EPSC/BIWTC as Engineer Superintendent. He acted as Engineering Manager of ICI for 13 years.

The 5th PSC 3rd Batch Cadet (1954) was late Captain Rashid Khan,(Ex-Conway). After 1971 war, he stayed back in Pakistan but returned to Bangladesh in 1977. He commanded pilgrim Ship Hijbul Bahr. Later on, Captain Rashid Khan served as consultant with a Finnish Company. He then migrated to USA and passed away in 2012. May his soul rest in peace.

A prominent BD Mariner is Rashid Ali Kazmi (2E) from Rajshahi. His proficiency in English Language was higher than any other cadet in the Academy. I always found him reading. His favourite reading items were Reader’s Digest Condensed Books in addition to other books and magazenes. During his apprenticeship in Karachi Shipyard, he was associated with an English magazine working in its Tower office in evenings. He also earned money from his writings. After 1971 war, he opted to stay in Pakistan and acted as Engineer Superintendent with private shipping companies in Karachi. Rashid Kazmi was a good photographer also. Lately he moved to Canada and settled in Toronto.

The whole world is in the severe grip of Covid-19. We hope and pray that by the grace of God Almighty, the situation becomes normal during 2021.

[PART-6] 02.03.2021

Respectable Sajid Hussain (15E), Commandant, Bangladesh Marine Academy writes with heavy heart, “ Our good friend A H M Mamun (15E) passed away in the early morning of 4th February, 2021.” Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Elaihe Rejeun. May his soul rest in peace, Amen. Our sympathies are with the bereaved family. He was teaching in the Liberian Maritime Training Institute (LMTI). Before this, he served with BSC, Long Lam Marine (Singapore) and MCA, UK. Late Mamun was a brilliant engineer, dedicated teacher, good manager and possessed excellent leadership qualities. According to C F Zaman (2E), he was humble, courteous and a great human being. How popular he was is evident from the fact that the condolence messages from BD Mariners are spread out on sixteen pages of my computer printouts.

Captain Imam Anwar (6N) passed away in Singapore on 7th January, 2021. May his soul rest in eternity. All our sympathies are with members of the bereaved family. Many BD mariners have paid tributes to late Imam Anwar. Captain Arup Chowdhury (10N) writes, “I remember him as a fine, outstanding officer of very high calibre. Later, he embarked on a business career as ship owner and through hard work, succeeded in building a group of companies whose business ranged from tea garden, cement factory, banking and many more fields”. He was a self made man indeed. Captain Shah Jalal (10N) writes, “ He was an exceptionally kind hearted gentleman with highest professional integrity. He always tried to help others out of the way especially BD Mariners.”

Captain F R Chowdhury (1N) writes in his article, “ SALUTE THE DEPARTED SOUL” on 10th May,2019. “ I remember late Sanaullah Chowdhury of Atlas Shipping with a lot of love, respect and admiration. He was laid to eternal rest in Dhaka on 25th April, 2019. With his sad demise, Bangladesh lost a worthy son of the Nation. He was no doubt the pioneer of private shipping in Bangladesh. In 1978, he set up Atlas Shipping Company and purchased second hand ships which were registered in Chittagong. The ships were AL-Salma, Al-Sharmeen, Al-Sayestha, Al-Sana, Al-Swamruz and Safar. These ships carried cargo to and from Japan, South Korea, Pakistan and Persian Gulf ports. Many BD Mariners served on ships of Atlas Shipping and went to the top of their careers. One example is that of Captain Saifullah. He joined Atlas Shipping as Cadet in 1978 and progressed to become Master in 1991. The spirit of late Sanaullah Chowdhury will remain alive in the minds of those connected with shipping in Bangladesh.”

It is sad news that Captain Nazmul Islam passed away on 1st January,2021. May his soul rest in peace, Amen. We sympathise with members of the bereaved family. He was not from the Academy but contemporary of 14th Batch.
In this year we have lost two prominent Pakistani Juldians in Karachi. Captain Hamid Hussain (2N) passed away in January,2021 and Captain Syed Mohammad (2N) left this world on 28th February,2021. May their souls rest in eternity, Amen. Our sympathies are with members of the bereaved families.
We should pray sincerely for the quick recovery of the following mariners who are in hospitals with serious ailments. 1. Captain F R Chowdhury (1N). 2. Engineer Azizur Rahman (4E) and 3. Captain Shamsuzzaman (11N).
With best wishes to all BD Mariners worldwide. Due to Corona pandemic, life has become extremely difficult especially for mariners. However, we can pray and hope that by the grace of God Almighty, things become normal again.

                [PART-7] 11.07.2021, London

Captain F R Chowdhury (1-N) writes in his one page article (dated 20-June,2021). “We all know that Philippines is the largest supplier of seafarers to the international shipping. But when it comes to the higher level of management ashore, Bangladesh leads the way. Certainly compared to our population, we have the highest number of mariners ashore spread all over the world. Look at our community in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, UK, USA and Canada. We are proud of it. We want it to continue that way. It has been possible because of hard work and determination of our mariners.”

Captain Azizul Haq (ex-Conway) was one of the five cadets nominated by Pakistan Public Service Commission to study in UK. They were the 3rd Batch cadets of 1954. He sailed as Master for many years. He also served as Superintendent in the Chittagong office of PNSC (then National Shipping Corporation). I sailed as Second Engineer with him on board one of Gokal’s ships. He was an exceptionally learned person and thorough gentleman. I always enjoyed listening to his speech. According to Bangladesh Marine Academy Booklet, “Honouring the Pioneers, 16th December, 2017, Captain Azizul Haq migrated and settled in Kobe, Japan.

The foreign countries in which BD Mariners are performing outstanding jobs include Indonesia also. One example is that of Captain M J Uddin (13N) who is associated with Cold Bridge Shipping Ltd. C/O  PT  Berlian Laju Tanker, WISMA BSG, 10/F, JI. Abdul Muis No. 40,  Jakarta 10160, Indonesia.

In my previous articles, I have mentioned Bangladeshi Lloyds Surveyors i.e. Zahidur Rahman, Khan Majlis and Ainul haq. At present, a prominent Lloyds Surveyor is Md. Jahidul Kamal working at Chittagong. He is Senior Surveyor & In charge, Marine and Offshore. He also Lead Auditor- ISM  ISPS  &  MLC. Mr Kamal is Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering  Science & Technology (IMarEST) UK.

One prominent BD Mariner is Md Golam Sarwar (19E) who is the Managing Director of Prantik Group. Akhtaruzzaman Centre (7th Floor), 21/22 Agrabad Commercial Area, Chittagong. This Company (Prantik) has been successfully in business  since 1998. Another outstanding BD Mariner is Captain Kamrul Islam Mazumder (13N). He is the Director and Chief Operating Officer (Off-Dock) of Summet Alliance Port Limited, Chittagong.

A little more about the achievements of Bangladesh Marine Academy, Chittagong. In early 2020, Bangladesh Marine Academy was awarded the prestigious “CERTIFICATE  OF  EXCELLENCE “ by the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) London. Before this, Sajid Hussain, the Commandant received the “OUTSTANDING AWARD IN MARINE EDUCATION 2019” from IMarEST, London on 15th March, 2019. The Commandant is also Trustee and  Council Member of the Institute.

On 6th July,2021, in the IMarEST Annual Conference 2021,  The Commandant spoke via video link on “Fostering Marine Generation Next—the BMA Strategy” followed by speech of Golam Mustafa, Adjutant BMA. After the nice speeches, questions put by the Host, Kenneth R G Rotter, were most satisfactorily answered by both speakers. Indeed, it is an excellent achievement of Bangladesh Marine Academy. We wholeheartedly congratulate the Academy and all credit goes to the Commandant, Sajid Hussain. It is commendable that Bangladesh Marine Academy is run by most efficient and dedicated hands. The message from BMA is loud and clear,”Our Cadets are smart, competent, skilled and deserve spontaneous employment.”

Now I mention a very interesting BD mariner. His name is Najmul Huda Chowdhury from Noakhali. Towards the end of my apprenticeship in Karachi, I came to know him as he was living near the residence of Bengali apprentices in Jacob Lines, Karachi. He was trying to join ship as cadet (direct entry) and was busy preparing for the job. One evening, I met him on Elphinstone Street ( now Zaibunnisa Street). He said that he was taking lessons in dance at a dance school on the same Street. It was a strange coincidence that in September 1968, both of us joined M V Al-Murtaza  in Karachi almost simultaneously, he as cadet and myself as junior engineer. He had a good number of his passport photos in uniform with him. He had printed his business cards entitled,”Najmul Huda Chowdhury, Cadet Officer”. He was a resourceful person and had  contacts with high officials of the Shipping Administration. On one occasion when our Ship Al-Murtaza was in Chittagong Port,he invited all officers of the Ship to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. One guest was no other than the Shipping Master from POMMD, Chittagong. Mr. Najmul Huda Chowdhury soon gave up sea service and set up his own business. His company’s name was Paramount Shipping Co. located on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a building on Sh. Mujib Road, Chittagong. I had met him last in the middle of 1996 when my ship M V Sea Tradition was in Chittagong Port. For quite some time, I have been tracing him but did not succeed.

We have lost the following mariners from 1st January 2021 till now. May their souls rest in eternity. Our sympathies are with all members of the bereaved families.

The latest good news is that Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan (11-N) has been awarded Chartered Master Mariner status. The words of the Certificate are as under.
“This is to certify that Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan, in the opinion of the Court of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, fulfils the requirements of the Company’s Royal Charter 1932 (amended 2013) is herewith recorded in the Register this 28th Day of July 2021 as having been granted the status of
Chartered Master Mariner
Chartership Number : oooo69

Signed by the Master of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and the Clerk of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners. London, 28. 07.2021”
Due to Corona, Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan could not come to London to receive the Award personally. However, he attended the event online and a clip of citation of his Award was recorded. It may be noted that Mr. Bhuiyan is the first Bangladeshi mariner to receive this prestigious Award. It is indeed an outstanding achievement on which many BD mariners feel happy and proud. Mr. Bhuiyan has been receiving congratulation messages from BD mariners stationed around the world. I also congratulate him wholeheartedly.

According to an article and photo published in a Bangla newspaper, SR Shipping has been declared the best Company in Bangladesh. As seen in the photo, on the occasion of World Maritime Day (30th September,2021) the Best Shipping Company Award was conferred on Mr. Meherul Karim (16 E) of SR Shipping. We congratulate Mr. Meherul Karim on his achievements. It is hoped that under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Meherul Karim and his colleagues, SR Shipping will insha’Allah grow further creating more job opportunities for BD mariners.

Credit goes to Md. Golam Sarwar (19E) who has set up the first world recognised Bangladesh’s salvage company. Captain Shafiq Bhuiyan writes in his message, “well done, Sarwar. We are proud of your willingness to take up challenges. We wish you all the best”. Sajid Hussain, the Commandant, Bangladesh Marine Academy writes in his message, “Dear Sarwar and Prantic Family, happy to see the highlights and history of your reputed company in the Business Standard. Keep it up! May Allah bless you in all your endeavours. Best wishes”. Captain Mushtaq Ahmed (11N) writes in his congratulatory message, “I am impressed by your achievements and putting the company in the global spotlight. Excellent story. You make us all proud. Wishing you and your company all the best in future.” The short message of our dear friend Forqanul Quader (6N) is worth mentioning. He writes,”it was history in the making – an amazing true success story. A daring one indeed. We are proud of you. Best wishes.” There are many messages of appreciation from BD mariners especially one from C F Zaman (2E) also. Indeed it is an outstanding achievement of Md. Golam Sarwar.

Credit also goes to Captain Abdullah Al Mahmud (21N) who researched tirelessly and worked hard to build almost from scratch the first solar power boat in Bangladesh. It is a catamaran named IRON. This boat has some interesting features. The hull material is wood/fibre composite. The parts were attached to each other with apoxy glue. No nails or screws were used at all. It is noteworthy that the entire hull of the boat was fabricated by Abdullah Al Mahmud with his own hands. In this venture, he was helped by his colleagues Moinul Islam and Yousuf. It took nearly two years to complete the boat. The boat is 25.5 metres long, 6.5 metres wide and its depth is 1.3 metres. Its approximate draft is 0.6 metres and displacement about 9 tonnes. There are two engines of 4.5 KW (6 Horsepower) each. It is run on solar power. If there is no sunshine, the boat can still run for two and a half to three hours. The boat is running successfully in Shitalakshya River, Narayanganj serving tourists.

The most remarkable aspect of the boat IRON is that in June 2021, it was placed for competition with the panel of the Electric Boat Associations of UK, Greece, Switzerland, USA and Canada. In the preliminary selection, there were 73 boats including IRON. In the short list of 6 boats, IRON was there. And finally IRON was the winner, grabbing the first position in the competition. Abdullah Al Mahmud received the Custave Troub Electric Boat Award 2021 in the Customised /DIY Electric Boat Category. It is a remarkable achievement for which Abdullah Al Mahmud should be wholeheartedly congratulated. No doubt, Abdullah is the pioneer of solar power boat building in Bangladesh. The entire marine community of Bangladesh should be proud of him.

Due to Corona Pandemic, the get together meetings of BD mariners in UK were almost suspended. However, our dear friend Mr. Khairul Anam (9N) broke the ice and arranged a grand function at his new house in Ramsey, Huntington to celebrate the marriage of his daughter Raeesa (with Naveed) on the 20th of August, 2021. Myself and wife Sadiqa were also invited. Khairul Anam’s son Adil was kind enough to pick us from Huntington Station in his car. We spent four/five hours at the function and enjoyed every minute of it. It was an excellent opportunity to meet more than a dozen BD mariners and their families. The seniormost mariner was Mr Fazlur R Chowdhury (1N). Mrs. Khairul Anam proved herself to be a good host. The food was extremely delicious and arrangements for music had also been made. It was indeed a memorable day.

The last good news is that the service of Sajid Hussain, Commandant Bangladesh Marine Academy has been extended. We wish him all the best and hope that he will continue his excellent work, insha’Allah.

Note. I shall be grateful if BD mariners especially those stationed in Chittagong could trace for me BD mariner Mr. Najmul Huda Chowdhury. He was contemporary of 5th batch of the Academy. His company’s office ( Paramount Shipping ) was situated on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a building on Sh. Mujib Road in Chittagong.

[PART-9] 10.12.2021, London

The first good news that Captain Zakirul Islam Bhuiyan (23-UK) has recently been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor at the Southampton Solent University. A good number of BD mariners have sent messages of appreciation and congratulations to Zakirul Bhuiyan. I also congratulate him on this great and rare achievement.

BD mariners are sharing the latest unique achievement of our dear friend Forkanul Quader (6N-UK). Tony Heslop of Southampton Marine Office has sent an eighteen lines message to him. Part of the message is reproduced below.

“Dear Forkanul, I am pleased to tell you that you have been awarded a ‘RECOGNISING POSITIVE IMPACT AWARD’ This is in recognition of the professional way you have supported the Southampton Marine Office with the backlog of outstanding course approval work dealing with this complex task in a very professional manner. Your commitment, determination, perseverance, professionalism and customer focussed approach over the past two years (nearly) has immensely helped the Marine Office to keep on top of outstanding /overdue list of course approvals. Regards, Tony Heslop”

Many BD mariners have sent messages of congratulations to Forkanul Quader. One example is that of Tariq Mahmood (7E) who writes,”Dear Forkan Bhai, Assalam Alaikum, my hearty congratulations to you on winning the award. I am so happy and proud of you. You have always been a source of inspiration for us and your achievement is a living proof of it. May Allah bless you with more success and prosperity in your future days. Please take care and stay blessed. Kind regards. Tariq Mahmood (7E)”. Messages of congratulations from C F Zaman (2E) and Sajid Hussain (15E), Commandant, BMA can also be seen on the BD mariners website.

There are a lot of congratulatory messages from BD mariners on the website for Captain Zakaria (1N) and his life partner Hasina Zakaria. In recognition of her valuable contribution in the field of education in Bangladesh, Professor Hasina has been awarded the prestigious “BEGUM ROKEYA PADAK”. Mr. Arif (27E) writes,”I would like to mention that Captain Zakaria has also received a LIFETIME AWARD from the Nautical Institute for his outstanding contribution in maritime sector.” I congratulate both Mr. and Mrs. Zakaria on their achievements. I remember that I was Chief Engineer of M V Banglar Doot (the first ship of BSC). The ship was waiting in Chittagong for lighterage operation. I availed the opportunity to attend the IMO WORKSHOP ON MARINE POLLUTION PREVENTION CONTROL AND RESPONSE held at the Academy from 24th to 28th April,1983. Captain Zakaria was then the Commandant of the Academy.

Another good news is that Karnaphuli Group of Bangladesh, the parent Company of the Dhaka based regional carrier HR Lines has signed at least four new building orders for 2900 TEU container ships at China’s Fujian Mawei Shipyard. According to Chinese sources, deliveries will start in September 2023 and Karnaphuli is believed to be paying around US dollars 38 million per ship. Some sources claim that Karnaphuli has ordered six ships of the type but this remains to be confirmed. This is indeed an indication of the commendable progress in the maritime industry of Bangladesh.

Credit goes to the Bangladeshi Industrialists, importers and ship owners to take full advantage of the price fall of second hand ships due to pandemic and purchased 37 vessels during the last two years. Now the number of ships registered in Chittagong is about 80. If we add the number of ships owned by Bangladeshis and registered outside (under flags of convenience), the total number of ships exceeds 100. It is indeed a remarkable achievement. The high number of jobs created for BD mariners on these additional ships is commendable.

The latest news is that Captain Kazi ABM Shameem has been appointed as the Counsellor Maritime Affairs in the Bangladesh High Commission in London. When he will resume his new assignment is not known. We wish him all the

best. Interestingly, when I called the Press Counsellor of Bangladesh High Commission to verify the news he expressed complete ignorance saying that no such post of Counsellor Maritime Affairs existed in the London Embassy of Bangladesh. However the news should be true as it is given in the BMAAA Newsletter of 4th December, 2021. I called my dear friend C F Zaman (2E) two days back and he also confirmed the news.

BD mariner Captain Moin Ahmed is presently holding the prestigious post of Director General, International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO) based in London. When I last met him at Captain Khairul Anam’s house on 20th August, 2021, he told me that he been awarded MAN OF THE YEAR prize. I have yet to receive more details from him about this achievement. Presently we congratulate him and wishing him more successes in future.

On 7th December 2021, I received the “MARINE PROFESSIONAL” magazine (Issue 4/2021) published by the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) London. On the page 36 of this magazine an eye catching advertisement of Bangladesh Marine Academy can be seen. The Ad. shows smartly dressed cadets on the Academy parade ground. Also can be seen one female cadet and a few other cadets on simulators. The logo of Bangladesh Marine Academy is prominently visible in the centre of the page. It is highly commendable that Bangladesh Marine Academy has affiliation/partnership with 23 Maritime Organisations worldwide. All credit goes to Dr. Sajid Hussain, the Commandant of the Academy.

This is my 10th article under the above heading.
Despite the hardships of corona pandemic, we have been receiving good and encouraging news about the achievements of Bangladeshi mariners with the commencement of new year 2022.
The latest good news is that Captain QABM Rahman has been awarded Ekushe Padak. Many BD mariners have sent messages of congratulations to Captain Rahman. Our friend Forkanul Quader (6N) writes in his 5th February, 2022 message, “congratulations to Captain QABM Rahman on being awarded Ekushe Padak. His lifelong service to the nation has finally been recognised. He is well known for his dedication and tireless effort in establishing BSC as the national flag carrier. As a true pioneer, he is an inspiration to Bangladesh maritime community.” ( Bangladesh Shipping Corporation was set up under Presidential Order No.10, on 5th February 1972. On completion of 50 years of operation, golden Jubilee of BSC was celebrated on 5th February,2022.) Captain Rahman is presently not feeling well. We wish and pray that God Almighty may grant him speedy recovery.
Bangladesh will honour Chief Engineer Inamul Haq (13E) with Commercially Important Person (CIP-Export) status for his significant contribution to the Country’s RMG export trade. He has been receiving this Award continuously for the 7th time. His Company is dedicated to excellence in merchandising, product development, production and export.
On 15th of December 2021, Md. Saiful Islam was elected as President of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Dhaka for year 2022. A leading entrepreneur and Commercially Important Person (CIP) status holder since 1998, Saiful Islam is the Managing Director of Picard Bangladesh Ltd.
Captain Jasimuddin Sarkar has been receiving a lot of congratulatory messages from BD mariners. He has taken his new assignment with the International Maritime Satellite Organisation ( IMSO ) in London. It is hoped that Captain Moin Ahmed ( present Director General) will pave the way for more BD mariners to join IMSO. It is true that job selection in these prestigious organisations is based purely on merit. However, the guidance of old employees of an organisation to the new job applicants cannot be overlooked.
Recently with great fanfare, the inauguration ceremony of BMAAA ( Bangladesh Marine Academy Alumni Association ) was hosted at Bangladesh Marine Academy campus. It is commendable that after two/three years of negotiations, that the two Organisations AABMA and JMAAA were finally merged to make BMAAA. I have always found these parallel associations quite confusing and I feel happy and satisfied that now there is only one Association. It is hoped that the new Association will serve the interests of Juldians in a much better way.
Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman (25E) is the General Secretary of Bangladesh Marine Academy Alumni Association (BMAAA). Mahbubur Rahman is Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST). His other qualifications are,
Marine Consultant (Lloyd’s Academy, UK)
Member CIWM (Chartered Institute of Waste Management)
Specialist Member IIRSM (International Institute of Risk and Safety Management)
C T O (Chief Technical Officer), Capella Consulting Services
Managing Director, HR Engineering & Ship Repairs / HR Ship Management
No doubt Mahbubur Rahman is an asset to Bangladesh in general and to the BD marine community in particular.

No doubt Mahbubur Rahman is an asset to Bangladesh in general and to the BD marine community in particular.

Our dear friend C F Zaman (2E) has referred to the statement of Dr. Ishrat Hussain (Title– The Bangladesh Story ) published in the Bangladesh Chronicle on 7thJanuary, 2022. Dr.Ishrat Hussain is a Pakistani and finance expert. He has served as Dean and Director, the Institute of Business Administration ( IBA ), Karachi (2008—2016); Chairman National Commission for Government Reforms (2006—2008) and Governor, State Bank of Pakistan (1999—2005). Dr. Hussain has also had a distinguished career at the World Bank for over two decades (1979—1999). He has to his credit PhD degree in Economics from Boston University. His book “PAKISTAN THE ECONOMY OF AN ELITIST STATE” is in front of me. The first paragraph of Dr Ishrat Hussain’s statement ( The Bangladesh Story ) is reproduced below.

“BANGLADESH is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Once called a ‘basket case’ by Henry Kissinger, it is now considered as a role model. Bangladesh’s national income has multiplied 50 times, per capita income 25 times ( higher than India’s and Pakistan’s ) and food production 4 times. Population growth was contained at 2.5 per cent, raising per capita food availability. Exports have grown 100 times and poverty is down to 20 per cent from 60 per cent in 1990. Life expectancy has risen to 72 years. Most social indicators are better compared to regional countries except Sri Lanka. The value of Human Development Index increased 60 per cent.”

In the progress of Bangladesh, the vital role of BD mariners cannot be ignored. They are modest heroes who work hard behind the screen and are sometimes not visible. BD mariners are well organised not only in Bangladesh but in foreign countries also. One highly commendable quality of BD mariners is that they guide and help one another in acquiring new jobs. Here I give two examples. Captain Fazlur Rahman Chowdhury (1N) writes in his 27th January message that the Italian Classification Society RINA requires surveyors. If suitable qualified people are not found locally, it may recruit from abroad. Bangladeshi Class-1 marine engineers should apply. Similarly Md. Rukonuzzaman (50N) writes in his message of 13th February, 2022 that Doreen Shipping Line of Bangladesh is looking for a senior captain with bulk carrier experience to work as General Manager. Job description and other details are given with the hope that one BD captain will fill this vacancy.

[PART-11] 09.08.2023, London

The best news is that Meghna Group of Bangladesh received four Mitsui design wide body bulk carriers (66,000 DWT each) from Yangzi-Mitsui Shipyard, China. The fourth vessel was handed over in a ceremony attended by about twenty guests from Bangladesh in June 2023. Shahan Shah (12E) writes in his congratulatory message of 5th June 2023, “This is a milestone in BD shipping sector. The new ships under BD flag will give employment to a good number of Bangladeshi mariners.” Messages of congratulations have been pouring in from many BD mariners stationed not only in Bangladesh but also in different parts of the world. Congratulations to Meghna Group on such a great achievement.

Captain Azizul Hoque (3N) is the first Extra Master of Bangladesh. He passed Extra Master Examination from UK in 1982. Captain Azizul Hoque served Bangladesh Shipping on different high posts given as under. First, he was Conservancy and Pilot Superintendent in BIWTA (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority). In 1972, he joined BSC as Deputy Marine Superintendent. In 1980, he joined Bangladesh Marine Academy as Nautical Instructor. In 1982, he was promoted to become Head of the Nautical Department and in 1984, he became Deputy Commandant of BMA. In 1986, he was posted as General Manager of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation. In 1987, Captain Azizul Hoque joined the Department of Shipping as Chief Nautical Surveyor. In 1990, he became Commandant of Bangladesh Marine Academy. (For some period, he served also as Technical Director of BSC). Captain Azizul Hoque was for some time associated with International Maritime Organisation (IMO). He prepared documents on STCW 1995 Convention of IMO.
In 2002, he was serving as Managing Director of BSC. On this post, he took tough and risky decisions converting BSC which was financially going in red, into a profitable Organisation so much so that its share price skyrocketed on Stock Exchange. In recognition of his contribution on “SAFER SHIPPING AND CLEANER OCEANS”, Captain Azizul Hoque was conferred Fellowship of the Nautical Institute, UK. It is indeed a big achievement. Last but not the least, he also served as Principal Lecturer in World Maritime University, Malmo, Sweden. The subject he taught was “Port State Control”. I think that the posts (all prestigious) Captain Azizul Hoque worked on may be close to a dozen.

Captain Azizul Hoque was an honest, hardworking, dedicated, highly qualified and true marine professional person. It is interesting to note that at the Academy, he was a cadet of average calibre and junior to me by one year. I remember whenever I spoke to him, his answer would be,” yes sir!”
It is worth mentioning that in addition to his job achievements, Captain Azizul Hoque managed successfully to give higher education to his four daughters and one son. His eldest daughter Sumaiya Haq is an English language Expert. She has served in four universities including three universities in Saudi Arabia. Second daughter Sonia Haq, (PhD) is Professor of Public Administration at University of Chittagong. His third daughter Doctor Rumana Haq also holds degree of MRC (Psyc-1). Fourth and youngest daughter Subah Zerin Haq got A’s in SSC Examination and is now preparing for HSC Examination. His only son Jeesanul Haq, MD (Internal Medicine) has been selected as Chief Resident of Piedmont Hospital, Athens, Georgia. USA. Captain Azizul Hoque is presently leading a retired life in Chittagong. We pray for his good health and long life.

Ghulam M Suhrawardy belongs to the 6th Batch of the Academy. After passing out from the Academy in 1969, he joined NSC vessel as cadet and soon became third officer. During the war of 1971, he deserted his ship in Baltimore and was granted political asylum in USA. Mr. Ghulam attended the State University of New York Maritime College. He obtained BS and MS degrees in Marine Transportation Management from this University.
Mr. Ghulam served in various positions in USA. He worked as Marine Surveyor, Terminal Manager, Port Captain and Operations Manager. In 1980, he started his own business in Marine Surveying with his wife by his side. He and his wife still work in the same office as they have done for all these years. They have developed it into a vibrant business encompassing many ports in the United States as well as in foreign countries. He permanently resides in New Jersey, USA and travels to Bangladesh often. Besides business operations in Bangladesh, Ghulam founded an English medium boarding school in Matlab, Chandpur. The Carter Academy named after the Nobel Laureate, US President Jimmy Carter. He intends to extend this campus to add a university and a medical college. Ghulam M Suhrawardy is the author of a comprehensive book on the Bangladesh Maritime History.

BD mariner Mohammad Hanif Dewan is MEO Class-1 (Unlimited), M.Phil., MET Consultant and PhD Researcher. His 12-page research article titled, “Roles and challenges of seafarers for implementation of energy efficiency operational measures onboard ships” was published in the esteemed journal “Marine Policy”. This magazine holds the distinction of being one of the oldest journals. It has consistently maintained its Q1 status since its inception (1972). Three more articles written by Mohammad Hanif Dewan as part of his PhD research have been published in Scopus-indexed Journals. Well done, Mr Dewan.

Lastly, I will mention BD mariner Md. Miron Hussain who served with me as Second Engineer onboard M V Zara (Nishan Shipping Lines, Chittagong) in 1997. His wife Mukta (real name: Mrs. Marufa Begum) was also sailing with him. He was a dedicated and truly professional engineer blessed with leadership qualities. Since 2002, he has been sailing as Chief Engineer in various foreign shipping companies. Presently he is serving with Mediterranean Shipping Company, Cyprus. Interestingly, he was offered to serve as Superintendent in the Company’s office, but he refused. In fact, he prefers to sail. He sails for four months and then stays home for approximately six months. Md. Miron Hussan has two sons, both highly educated. I am in touch with him via phone and email. I wish him and his family all the best. Md. Miron Hussain (resident of Lalmonirhat,North Bangladesh) is not from the Academy. I remember he could speak fluent Urdu.

All BD mariners are requested to send me their comments. In my eleven articles (thirty four, A-4 pages), I have written about more than half century BD mariners. I wish to cover most of them. I shall be grateful if some BD mariners could send me details of mariners who, in their opinion, have not been mentioned in these writings. I shall be pleased if interested mariners may also kindly send me their own CV’s or brief professional profiles for my forthcoming articles.

 (to be Continued )

Note 1. It is earnestly requested that BD Mariners may kindly may send their remarks about my writings. I shall be pleased to welcome more profiles of BD Mariners to include in my subsequent articles. In my five articles under the topic, “ACHIEVEMENTS OF BANGLADESHI MARINERS”, I have mentioned about seighty (80) Mariners. This number will Insha’Allah soon touch one hundred (100). I wish to mention the achievements of as many BD Mariners as possible.
Note 2. I shall be grateful if BD Mariners may kindly trace for me one BD Chief Engineer, MR MIRON HOSSAIN. He was Second Engineer with me in 1997 on board M V Zara of Nishan Shipping Company, Chittagong. Afterwards, he sailed for a number of years as Chief Engineer on Irani ships. His postal address is, TARANGO RADIO ELECTRONICS GOSHALA ROAD P O BOX 5500 LALMONIRHAT BANGLADESH PHONE- 0088 0591 225 OR 556 I sent him several letters and telephoned him many times but was not successful in contacting him. I don’t have his email address.
Note 3. I am keen to trace Captain Azizul Haq (ex-Convay) from the Third Batch of PSC (1954) Cadets. He was Superintendent in the Chittagong Office of National Shipping Corporation (now PNSC). Finally he migrated and settled in Kobe, Japan. I shall be thankful if some senior BD Mariner could give me information about Captain Azizul Haq.
