Message from the High Commissioner

I am very happy to say a few words on the occasion of the publication of the Magazine “Nongor”(Anchor). The Nongor is the publication of the Bangladeshi Mariners’ Community-Singapore (BMCS).

The Bangladeshi Mariners’ Community in Singapore through their skills, experience, and professional competence are not only contributing to the economy of Singapore but also to their motherland-Bangladesh.

The Maritime and Marine sector is an area where skills, experience and expertise is highly valued. I am happy to note that the Bangladeshi Mariners have firmly established their presence in Singapore and have earned name, fame and glory through their sincerity, hard work and devotion. It is not only in Singapore but in developed countries like USA, Canada where our Mariners are highly sought after. I can say this with much pride.

All of us have a responsibility and duty towards our motherland. We must contribute to our country and economy through our skill and experience. Those who are fortunate enough to get jobs abroad should try to share their skills and experiences with fellow Mariners in Bangladesh.

We must remember the supreme sacrifice of those who laid their lives for the independence of Bangladesh. The valiant freedom fighters and the martyrs dreamt of a prosperous Bangladesh and an exploitation free society. It is only by transforming our country into a developed country and by reducing income disparity that we can realise their dreams and ideals.

I take this opportunity to recognise the hard work and contribution of the Mariners’ community in Singapore. I also laud their initiative in bringing out this magazine. The Mariners in Singapore has also ventured in social welfare activities and have established a strong network among themselves. I would request them to utilise their strong bondings to come forward at times of need and distress. The Marine Community in Singapore is playing a pro-active and constructive role in the development of our bilateral relations. I appreciate their initiatives.

I wish the Bangladeshi Mariner’s Community of Singapore all success in their future endeavours.
(Mahbub Uz Zaman)
