I have just met Akter Sir only in May 2013 for the 1st and last time even though I know him remotely for many years. It is difficult for me to accept that my senior, elder brother, a smiling good heart is no more. May Allah give his family strength to go on and his departed soul to rest in peace and grant him Jannah.
May his soul be rest at eternal peace!!!!!!!!!!
Kindly add my website into your site so that all Bangladeshi Mariners can attached with us for Job vacancy.
Few comments extracted from Mariner’s Forum “bdmariners@googlegroups.com”.

The problem remains within our professional people serving in the government sector. There should be a forum where we can raise the issues. Also new post to be created and as well as old vacant post should be filled with competent and honest person.

What has been said is the correct reflection of current picture. I fully agree with the comments made by IMO’s Fuazuddin. It is indeed a sad state of affair. There were responsible officers at the helm when approvals were given to influential entities without having evaluating the implications. I voiced my deep concern during my talk & sessions in Marine Academy as well as at NI & one other forum; during my recent trip to Bangladesh. People responsible seem to shy away from such topic.
I firmly believe that more must be done to get to the bottom of this and address the issue at correct level.
Kind regards.

TRIBUTE TO CAPT QUDDUS, MY FIRST MASTER AT SEA
1975 BANGLAR TARANI, MY MAIDEN VOYAGE AS A CADET UNDER COMMAND OF CAPT QUDDUS.
AT COLOMBO ANCHORAGE I WAS STANDING ON THE BRIDGE-WING AS A LOOKOUT.
CAPTAIN QUDDUS CAME UP AFTER BREAKFAST:
-WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
-SIR, LOOK-OUT
-WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF A LOOK-OUT?
-SIR, TO LOOK AROUND THE SHIP
-THAT’S ALL?
-YES SIR
-HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU REPORT TO THE DUTY OFFICER SINCE THE BEGINNING OF YOUR DUTY?
-NEVER
-SO YOU ARE ‘SIGHT-SEEING’ NOT KEEPING’ LOOK-OUT’
-(NO ANSWER)
-DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘SIGHT-SEEING’ AND ‘LOOK-OUT’ ? A ‘LOOK-OUT’ MUST REPORT EVERY THING HE SEES AROUND. IF THERE IS NOTHING AROUND, HE SHOULD STILL REPORT ‘ALL CLEAR’ EVERY FIFTEEN/TWENTY MINUTES. FOR SIGHT-SEEING YOU DON’T NEED TO REPORT. SO WHAT YOU ARE DOING, IN FACT, IS SIGHT-SEEING. GO! AND REPORT TO THE DUTY OFFICER.
I ENTERED THE BRIDGE, REPORTED ‘ALL CLEAR’ AND WENT OUT TO THE OTHER WING. AFTER A WHILE CAPTAIN FOLLOWED ME TO THE OTHER WING:
-DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE BEARING?
-YES SIR
-OK.THEN GO ON THE MONKEY BRIDGE, USE THE STANDARD COMPASS, TAKE BEARINGS FROM THREE DIFFERENT SHORE OBJECTS AND PLOT THE SHIP’S POSITION ON THE CHART.
I RAN UP AND DOWN, TOOK THE BEARINGS, APPLIED CORRECTIONS AND PLOTTED ON THE CHART. THE BEARINGS DID NOT INTERSECT AT THE SAME POINT AND A RATHER BIG ‘COCKED HAT’ WAS FORMED. ONE CORNER OF THE ‘COCKED HAT’ WAS ABOUT FOUR MILES TOWARDS SHORE FROM THE SHIP’S ACTUAL POSITION. CAPTAIN WAS STANDING BEHIND. HE LOOKED AT ME WITH A SMILE:
-STILL BETTER, YOU DID NOT PUT THE VESSEL ASHORE. DO YOU KNOW WHY IT HAPPENS?
-SIR , MAY BE UNKNOWN MAGNETIC CAUSE
– YES, BUT MOST OF THE TIMES IT IS DUE TO IGNORANCE. I SAW YOU OBSERVED THE BEARINGS WITH YOUR WRIST-WATCH ON. YOUR METALLIC WRIST-WATCH DISTURBED THE COMPASS. SO LEAVE YOUR WATCH ON THE TABLE AND DO THE FIXING AGAIN.
I DID THE FIXING AGAIN. THE COCKED HAT WAS STILL THERE BUT SMALLER. CAPTAIN WASN’T STILL SATISFIED .HE ASKED ME IF HAD ANY OTHER METALIC THING WITH ME. I TOOK OUT A BIG BUNCH OF STORE-KEY FROM MY POCKET. SEEING THAT HE LAUGHED ALOUD:
-IS THIS YOUR UNKNOWN MAGNETIC CAUSE?
HE WAS AN EXCELLENT PROFESSIONAL TEACHER, WHO USED TO LOVE TEACHING THROUGH EVERY DAY ACTIVITIES AND A VERY PRUDENT MARINER. AS A MAN HE WAS CARING, HUMBLE, HONEST, AFFABLE AND FATHERLY. I CONSIDER MYSELF VERY FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO START MY CAREER AT SEA UNDER SUCH A PERSONALITY. HIS DEDICATION TO SEAFARING IS DEMONSTRATED BY HIS DECISION TO SEND ALL THREE OF HIS SONS TO THE SEA, WHICH IS A RARE EXAMPLE IN THIS COUNTRY.
AN UNPRECEDENTED INVITATION
QUITE A FEW YEARS BACK CAPT QUDDUS WAS ONCE ADMITTED IN DHAKA APOLLO HOSPITAL. I VISITED HIM THERE AND INQUIRED ABOUT HIS HEALTH CONDITIONS AND SHARED SOME OLD MEMORIES WITH HIM. HE WAS SICK YET JOLLY WITH STRONG DETERMINATION. AFTER SPENDING SOME TIME WITH HIM FINALLY WHEN I WAS ABOUT TO LEAVE, HE CALLED ME:
-‘SHAFIQ, PLEASE ATTEND MY FUNERAL, IF YOU CAN’
I WAS STUNNED. I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO HIS INVITATION. I DON’T REMEMBER IF I HAD SAID ANYTHING. WHILE RETURNING FROM HOSPITAL I WAS RECPITULATING – IN MY WHOLE LIFE, I GOT INVITATIONS FROM MANY PEOPLE, ON MANY OCCASIONS LIKE, BIRTHDAY, WEDDING, FESTIVAL, ANNIVERSARY, INAUGURATION, RE-UNION BUT NEVER AN INVITATION FROM ANY ONE FOR HIS OWN FUNERAL. ONLY A PERSON WITH STRONG FAITH AND COURAGE CAN HAVE THE AUDACITY OF EXTENDING SUCH AN UNPRECEDENTED INVITATION. THAT MADE CAPTAIN QUDDUS AN EXTRA-ORDINARY PERSON TO ME.
IT IS MY BAD LUCK THAT I COULD NOT PHYSICALLY ATTEND HIS FUNERAL. I GOT THE MESSAGE OF HIS FINAL DEPARTURE AT 1044 AT DHAKA FROM HIS SON CAPT SALAUDDIN AT CHITTAGONG AND THE FUNERAL WAS DUE IN LESS THAN SIX HOURS. I COULD FIND NO MEANS TO GET THERE IN TIME. HOWEVER, SPIRITUALLY I DID PARTICIPATE, SOON AFTER MY ASAR PRAYER ON THAT DAY I ARRANGED A ESPECIAL PRAYER FOR THE DEPARTED SOUL. FURTHER, I REQUESTED AS MANY OF MY FRIENDS AND FELLOW MARINERS AS I COULD REACH, TO ATTEND HIS FUNERAL ON MY BEHALF.
MAY ALLAH PLACE HIM IN THE HIGHEST PLACE IN HEAVEN.
TO THE FAMILY OF CAPTAIN QUDDUS SIR, I CONVEY MY DEEPEST REGARDS. I HAVE SUCH FOND MEMORIES OF SAILING UNDER YOUR BELOVED FATHER. MY SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO ALL OF YOU. MAY GOD GIVE YOU THE COURAGE AND STRENGTH TO WITHSTAND SUCH A TREMENDOUS SHOCK.
FROM
CAPT A K M SHAFIQULLAH
Excellent article sir! Wondering why Bangladesh Govt. is not exploiting your experience and insight. The present problem of employment of seafarer will vanish if Bangladesh can attract foreign shipowners by offering an open registry.

Atiqur Rahman – an icon of a good Mariner left early for the final destination, where we all are destined for. Life follows countless different paths and death ends of the journey for all.
He was a great personality and liked by all. Mariners and friends in South Shields offered remarkable emotional supports to his family to survive from the sudden loss. I hope they and all other mariners elsewhere, will continue to support the family left in absolute uncertainty.
I would like to invite the wives of the mariners in the UK to form a UK Support Organisation with regional branches, particularly to provide much needed help to the Mariners families after a mariner makes his one way final voyage to eternity.
Atiqur Rahman, an icon of a good mariner will be in our heart. I pray to Allah, the Almighty and the Kindest, for mercy for Atiqur Rahman and all of us following him.

Last few years back the marine sector in Bangladesh has been exploited by some greedy persons in various ways. One of the best possible way was opening the private academy and with false commitment to the poor unknown student admitted into the academy and at the end of day no job for the pass out cadet.
Moreover our beloved marine academy also increased its cadet recruitment without best possible market demand and not looking for more opening for cadet employment. Result of all the private and large numbers of cadet from MA have no job for years.
The misery of these unemployed cadet if any one heard just feel like to say sorry as there is very little can be done as a individual man who is sailing on senior rank. And I don’t see much activities from any marine platform as well compare to the need of urgency for these long time unemployed fresh cadet.
No doubt few good Hearted mariners working ashore trying for some opportunity and got some success. But still not enough.
Being a professional proud mariner when had to faced so many request from numerous cadet for a assignment I just see the request and just feel so dishearten that I can do nothing.
Where is pride for our profession? I am reading lot of writing almost everyday in lot of social media and feel sorry without any help. Now as few are trying for some success for jobs but with the behaviour of our on job mariners wrong doing making the way harder or even closed. Just yesterday seen two Bangladesh mariners jumped in Canada.
So when few of us trying hard for opening the opportunity and on the hind side some are doing so nonsense like above or unprofessionalism activities while working in foreign companies where the name of Bangladeshi mariners is becoming blacklisted.
Moreover the lack of professional quality, attitude of our few fellow mariners tarnishing our achievement in international market.
Today this situation only can be over come by the following step in feel
•To create a strong mariner community bringing all mariners under one platform.
•To lead the community with strong leadership to create a strong message among the society and create a positive thought about our marine profession.
•To co-ordinate with government agency and make them bound to look after the problem.
•To train the mariners of right professionalism for the betterment of the marine community.
•Those are already engaged in government office must liaise with the community leaders and find the realistic solution of the problem and make long term plan.
•To work with foreign companies in government level.
•To work as real professional mariners where ever we are to create a strong base for the juniors.

The news of the sad expiry of Mr. Mohsin Khan Eusufzai is personally heart wrenching and deeply shocking to me.
I talked to him only 2 nights back requesting his CV which I forwarded to my NGO’s Board of Directors only yesterday morning for a possible employment in my organisation to assist me to look after our existing floating hospital ships and the new ships we are about to start building. And now this sad news. I cannot digest it. I am confused and perplexed at the turn of events. He was such a nice and good person. I will miss him dearly.
Some years back, perhaps in 2006-7, I selected him as a Surveyor for Germanischer Lloyd but he could not join as his wife was a practicing doctor in Dhaka and his place of posting was Chittagong.
It’s Allah’s will that he is no longer with us. I pray to Him that he forgives Mohsin of all his sins and gives him an abode in jannah.
My heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
Kind regards to all with a request to all of you who read this mail to pray for the departed soul.

I am deeply shocked at his sudden demise.I came across him on a number of occasions.A plain & simple gentleman.
Just day before yesterday when I was dropping my elder daughter at school,he called me out fm the rickshaw as he was passing by.
His smiling face is still so vivid in my mind, can hardly believe that he had passed away for the eternal journey.
May Allah grant him Jannat.Innah lillahi wa innahilahi raziun.

Really excellent. Congratulations.
I wonder and appreciate the hard work you have put in to accumulate all these items, some of which are very rare. It is a unique collection and I doubt if any private individual can match this collection to any degree. Everyone of us must see your collection, lest we forget our roots. It will be very interesting for the new generation of Mariners.
When I am in Ottawa next, I will In Shaa Allah go over to Montreal to see it. I think it is worth a private exhibition. Keep on collecting and best wishes.

Dear Mariners,
As…kum
Mutaher Hussain (Mintu) 9E, expired on 8th Dec 17 in Dhaka due to heart attack while having coffee in a restaurant. He was on a short holiday.
His body was brought to Melbourne on 15th Dec and buried next day. His family has expressed gratitude for your kind condolence messages/phone calls and will be read out before the audience during a memorial DOA mahfil after the New Year
His sudden and untimely death has shaken Melbournians and has created a void among our close knit marine community. He was three years my junior, a loving younger brother and was more than my family member. Our frequent home visits, dinner, adda, disputes/reconciliations spanned for nearly 30 years.
Before his ill-fated journey to Bangladesh, he told me that he worked very hard throughout the year (14 hrs a day), tired and stressed out, must go away from building sites for R & R with his family & friends. I told him; in that case he must feed us best food in the best place. He hosted a grand party for all Victorian mariners in a renowned restaurant. As the adda went on for an extended period, many of us incurred parking fines for our cars, I recall with very heavy heart that Mutaher forcibly took away these infringement notices from our hands and EFTed fines to council through his mobile phone.
After getting redundant from employment, he got his practical hands-on experience in our first home construction at Cheltenham, Melbourne. I sponsored and facilitated him to obtain building license and he rapidly mastered intricate construction process and project management skill. I continued to support him particularly in compliance and legal issues, at times we got locked up in bitter arguments but ended in resolutions, He was a very pleasant, smart, rough and tough guy and starting from zero, he was managing over $3 million worth of building works and recently bought another new Porsche SUV.
Due to dwindling burial grounds in Melbourne, we, Victorian Mariners have recently purchased a section of Muslim graveyard within Melbourne metropolitan area and each mariner was allocated a pair of monumental graves with freehold titles
Mutaher has become the first mariner, taken a spot for eternal rest in this newly acquired “Mariners Cemetery”.
We shall remember Mutaher in all days to come. May Allah keep his soul in heaven.
Kind regards
Dilwar Ali (6E)
